Impact of Technology on Education
Technology
has enormous impact on every steps of our modern day life. Amongst them
education is no exception. Education has got much changed over the last few centuries.
But the bigger change came from the later part of previous century with the invention
and development of technology.
“During
the days back 10th century, there was no printed book for the
beginners, wooden books (Taktis) were used.”
History
says, in Brahmanic fashion of education pupils have to practice living with the
teacher for the purpose of education. In Buddhist era pupils needed to go to
the monastery and lived there for learning religious scriptures and art of
living. With the coming of Muslims in the Indian subcontinent from the 7th
Century, education took a new shape. Muslims established Maktab (Primary
School) and Madrasah (Secondary and Higher School) which makes the education a
form of initialization. But like Brahmanic and Buddhist Muslims also could not
come out of the communality to spread the education for all. Like Brahmanic, Buddhist
education, these Maktabs and Madrasahs were also confined to the teaching of
Muslim pupils. The Madrasahs teaches both religious and secular subjects. The religious education included the
study of Holy Quran, Hadith, Islamic laws and Islamic history etc. The secular
education included the study of Arabic literature, grammar, history,
philosophy, mathematics, geography, politics, economics, languages and
agriculture etc. The ‘Madrasahs’ imparted secondary and higher education.
During the days back 10th century, there was no printed book for the
beginners, wooden books (Taktis) were used.
“The traditional method of
lecture by a teacher in front of the students from a podium or dais in a class
room substitutes by Podcast, Webinar, YouTube, Videos and Slides in the web.”
Now-a-days, technology plays
pivotal part in the whole process of education from Kindergarten to University
level education. The use of slate and chalk have completely been disappeared.
Instead, iPad, Mac Book Air, Smart Phone came to the hands of the pupils. The
use of note book and pen are gradually being diminished from the class room.
The traditional method of lecture by a teacher in front of the students from a
podium or dais in a class room substitutes by Podcast, Webinar, YouTube, Videos
and Slides in the web. These are flexible and accessible with no bound in terms
of time and space.
These are the ways how technology
changed the education: (1) Education now extends beyond the class room walls.
With the device like iPad for example students are no longer confined to a
computer lab or a class room. Portable technology is bridging the gap between
the class room and home or distance place. (2) The printed text books are being
replaced by eBooks. This eBook is becoming more popular due to they are
cheaper, more up-to-date and easy to access and more interactive. (3) There is
a change in student and teacher roles. With the development of technology
students and teacher roles have changed. The students have become more active
and engaged. Rather than teacher only relays information and student absorb
them. Teacher has become more of a facilitator than relaying information. (4) Technology
allows teacher to deliver more personalized learning. It allows lessons can be
customized to fit.
“A variety of credit and
non-credit programmes are being offered online by internationally recognized
and reputed universities.”
The students who are unable to
afford time to attend classes due to full-time work or family obligations, can
continue his education online. A variety of credit and non-credit programmes
are being offered online by internationally recognized and reputed
universities. Online education is a kind of educational instruction that is
delivered via internet to the students using their home computers. Online
degree is gaining popularity as alternative to the nontraditional students due
to its unique feature of ultimate flexibility and accessibility. It has created
